5 Air Cargo Sustainability Trends in 2022

With the world’s attention turning to sustainability, the focus has shifted to what we, as businesses and consumers, can do to make our lives more environmentally friendly.

Air freight businesses are being encouraged to evaluate how they operate in order to minimise their environmental impact, with climate change and sustainability at the forefront. Many airline operators are being pressured to adapt their strategies in order to stay competitive. This has included offering sustainable air freight support to keep up with the massive expansion in worldwide e-commerce.

We are aviation professionals at CharterSync, providing air cargo charter services. We are an air cargo firm that provides our customers and partners with an innovative, efficient and empowering booking and management platform.

Here are five air cargo sustainability trends to watch in 2022:

1. Rise In Aircraft Efficiency

Some of the world’s leading air freight businesses, such as UPS and FedEx, are actively investing in more efficient aircraft in the hopes of reducing their carbon emissions. This includes taking into account elements like aircraft weight, size, and design, as well as maximising fuel economy to ensure that they have the least amount of environmental impact possible. Airlines such as Cathay Pacific also recently announced their commitment to net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. This makes them one of the first airlines in Asia to set a timeline for going carbon neutral.

2. Increase In Unit Load Devices (ULD)

The production of lightweight unit load devices is steadily expanding, and between now and 2026, this trend is likely to continue. As a result of the weight decrease from the ULDs, an air cargo company may be able to increase the number of parcels it can ship at one time. Due to the reduced cargo weight, this may also result in lower fuel usage.

3. More Sustainable Aviation (SAF) Fuel Available

Natural materials, including algae, agricultural leftovers, feedstock, and carbon and waste oils, can be used to make sustainable aviation fuel. Depending on the sustainable feedstock utilised, production process, and supply chain to the airport, SAF is expected to reduce carbon emissions by up to 80% over the lifecycle of the fuel compared to the traditional jet fuel it replaces. Sustainable aviation fuel is not yet extensively utilised, although it is gaining popularity.

4. Increase In E-Freight

Carriers, freight forwarders, ground handlers, shippers, customs brokers, and customs officials are all part of the E-freight effort, which intends to create an end-to-end paperless air cargo transportation process using a legislative framework, electronic messaging, and high data quality. This paperless procedure aids the reduction of carbon emissions and waste that may be generated by an air cargo company.

5. The Rise In Carbon Offset Investments

Making considerable investments in projects that assist to reduce the quantity of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere is an easy approach for air cargo charter firms to become more sustainable. This is a prevalent trend in which anyone within the supply chain can offset some or all of the carbon emissions generated by an air cargo charter.
